Sleep is sometimes treated as whatever time remains after the rest of life is finished. Yet sleep is not simply downtime. NIH guidance notes that sleep affects mental and physical health and helps people think more clearly, focus better, and function at their best.

A healthier approach starts with consistency rather than perfection. Going to bed and waking at roughly consistent times, reducing stimulating screen exposure before bedtime, getting physical activity during the day, and creating a dark, quiet, comfortable sleep environment can support better sleep habits.

Sleep belongs in the larger lifestyle picture. Movement, nutrition, stress management, daily structure, and recovery interact. If sleep difficulties are persistent, severe, or accompanied by significant daytime impairment, individualized professional evaluation may be appropriate.

Rest is not time stolen from your goals. Rest can be one of the resources that helps you pursue them.
