Question: What is a Holistic Approach to Health & Wellness?
Answer: A “Holistic Approach” (An integrative, comprehensive and collective approach) to health and wellness is an approach based upon looking at the totality of the person, not just their symptoms or diagnoses, when creating and designing treatment, therapy and wellness options. It’s also an approach based upon a natural approach to wellness that considers the least harmful means of helping the client move forward and helping them overcome their present challenges, obstacles, complaints and symptoms with the least amount of side effects or unintended consequences. It’s also an approach the embraces the concept that the first response to helping someone from a health and wellness perspective shouldn’t be reaching for a prescription pill.
A high quality, proactive, holistic health and wellness approach helps the client build the mental muscles, a resilient mindset and a set of choices, habits and rituals before just handing them a pill to solve their problems. However, in the health and wellness field, there are circumstances (hypertension, diabetes, etc.) where a prescription approach is needed at least at the time of the crisis. But that doesn’t mean that the first solution to helping every person with a problem should be handing them a pill.
An integrative, holistic (i.e., comprehensive and collective) approach helps clients without causing unnecessary harm, and it encompasses a “whole” view of the client.
Question: What is the reason for Health & Wellness Coaching?
Answer: Health & Wellness Coaching is a health, wellness, diet, nutrition and weight loss approached based upon providing individuals with health and wellness related concepts, skills, strategies and behaviors that lead to healthier lifestyles, better living and more positive health outcomes. Health & Wellness Coaching also helps individuals cope with chronic health and medical conditions in holistic and intelligent ways.
My practice, Atlanta Health & Wellness Coaching, employs many of the principles, concepts and strategies that are presented within the book The Nutrient Diet, which is a nutritional and cognitive behavioral approach to health, wellness, diet, nutrition and weight loss.
Question: Why are more and more people becoming overweight and obese and developing chronic medical conditions?
Answer: Being overweight, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, peripheral artery disease, coronary artery disease, pulmonary (i.e., breathing-oriented) diseases and other chronic health and mental health conditions are escalating because people are stressed out and their first impulses and reactions are to use food and alcohol to self-medicate.”
Essentially, Americans are burned out, exhausted, frustrated and overwhelmed, and food and drink, based upon our basic survival drives, which are readily available, are the cheapest and easiest coping method available for most people.
Additionally, the presence and growth of unhealthy, quick options is leading more people to make choices that are more readily available to them (fast food restaurants, etc.) and that are quick, easy and cheap.
Question: Why do most diet and weight loss plans fail?
Answer: The vast majority of diet plans and approaches fail because they expect a person to make too many primary changes at once. In essence, they expect you to change overnight (instead of doing so gradually and naturally), leaving most dieters feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. And plans, goals and objectives tend to fail when they require too many steps too quickly.
Question: What is different about “The Nutrient Diet” compared with other diets, weight loss, and health and wellness approaches?
Answer: The Nutrient Diet is a “Lifestyle Approach” for general & mental health based upon sound psychological principles. The Nutrient Diet is 50% Diet and Nutrition, and 50% Cognitive and Behavioral Psychological Strategies for eating behaviors, dieting, impulse control and habit formation. The Nutrient Diet is the first book of its kind to take a “Cognitive Behavioral” (i.e., Psychological) approach to diet, nutrition, health, wellness, weight loss, weight management and lifestyle management.
The Nutrient Diet truly is a “Trendsetter” in the diet, health, wellness, medicine, nutrition, weight loss, weight management and lifestyle fields. The Nutrient Diet also encompasses principles from “Ketogenic Diets” and “Ketogenic Approaches”, taken from insights, research data and clinical findings introduced by Dr. Christopher Palmer, the Harvard Expert on the ketogenic diet. Dr. Palmer has used the “Ketogenic Diet” in his practice for the past 2 decades. In “The Nutrient Diet: A Cognitive Behavioral Approach to Diet, Impulse Control, Habit Formation, Eating Behaviors & Weight Management”, I offer a completely new, bold, intelligent, modern, psychological approach to diet, health, wellness and weight loss and weight management habits.
Not only does “The Nutrient Diet” show and explain what dieters need to eat, it also explains how and why they should eat it — based on sound, tested scientific data, clinical trials and psychological principles. It does so in a way that teaches and coaches them to make lifestyle changes easily, naturally, gradually and progressively so that they do not get frustrated and overwhelmed along the way.
The Nutrient Diet shows you how to use planning, strategy, habits, rituals, actions, and behavior patterns (i.e., cognitive behavioral methods) so that they become allies in your weight-management, diet, and lifestyle goals. Together, these tools, methods, resources, strategies, and approaches will help you to develop healthy nutrition habits, lose weight, understand how foods work in your body, break food addictions, and develop better health and lifestyle practices — while simultaneously adding joy, happiness, and fulfillment to your life.
Seeing Americans (including myself) gain weight during the COVID19 Pandemic inspired the writing of “The Nutrient Diet”, since obesity is a significant risk factor for increased morbidity and mortality associated with a COVID19 infection. Weight really does matter, especially during a global pandemic associated with an insidious, aggressive and highly mutagenic respiratory virus.
Question: What is the most important thing about diet, nutrition, wellness, health, and weight loss?
Answer: The keys to diet, weight management, and impulse control are habit and ritual creation, formation, and sustainment. Changing habits gradually and in a sustainable way is the only true way to be healthy and to maintain a weight and lifestyle that works for you.
The key isn’t doing what everyone else does. The key is combining the science of nutrition with what works with your unique DNA, metabolism, lifestyle choices and individual health and weight goals.
The real key is where science meets individuality and unique lifestyle goals and choices. These choices and habits all protect you from poorer health outcomes (including from viruses like COVID19). Maintaining a healthy weight prevents hospitalizations from COVID19.
Question: What inspired your Health & Wellness Practice and your diet book, The Nutrient Diet?
Answer: The Nutrient Diet was inspired by the courage and confidence by which Oprah Winfrey took on health conditions like being overweight and obesity during the 80s and 90s on the Oprah Winfrey Show ®–taking away much of the stigma and shame associated with weight-oriented challenges and body image. It was also inspired the by the degree of weight gain that I and many Americans experienced during the COVID19 Pandemic.
