CDC’s updated immune-health guidance separates two ideas that are often blurred together: healthy daily habits support immune function, while vaccines train the immune system to recognize specific diseases.

Healthy habits and vaccines do different jobs

CDC’s September 2026 guidance makes an important distinction. Sleep, nutrition, physical activity, smoking avoidance, hygiene, and cleaner air can support overall health and immune function. Vaccines serve a different purpose: they train the immune system to recognize specific diseases. A healthy lifestyle does not substitute for recommended vaccination, and vaccination does not eliminate the value of healthy daily routines.

Start with the basics that support recovery

Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep each night. CDC notes that sleep supports immune responses and that even modest sleep loss can weaken immune defenses. Nutrition matters as well: protein, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats provide nutrients involved in normal immune function. These basics are less dramatic than a marketed “immune booster,” but they are more consistent with how the immune system actually works.

Movement belongs in the plan

Regular physical activity supports overall health and immune function and may improve antibody responses after some vaccinations. CDC continues to recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, per week for most adults, with individualization when health conditions or physical limitations are present. The useful coaching goal is consistency, not perfection.

Reduce exposure as well as improving resilience

Immune wellness is not only about what happens inside the body. Handwashing, cleaner indoor air, avoiding close contact with people who are ill when possible, and staying home when sick can reduce exposure to respiratory pathogens. These are practical environmental strategies that work alongside sleep, nutrition, activity, and vaccination.

Use a fall checklist instead of a quick fix

A practical fall wellness review can include sleep consistency, regular meals with adequate protein and produce, movement, smoking cessation support when relevant, medication review, management of chronic conditions, and a conversation with a healthcare professional about recommended vaccines. The goal is not to “supercharge” immunity. It is to support the body’s normal defenses and reduce avoidable risk.

Key takeaways

  • Healthy habits support general immune function; they do not create disease-specific immunity.
  • Vaccines and healthy routines are complementary, not competing, strategies.
  • Sleep, nutrition, movement and smoking avoidance are high-value daily foundations.
  • Prevention also includes reducing exposure through hygiene and cleaner air.

Next step: Schedule an appointment.
